Adverbs

Read the folowing sentences.

1. Mohan swims fast.
2. Sudha is very beautiful girl.
3. Seema swam too fast and won the championship.

The words in bold are adverbs. In these sentences, the adverbs perform various functions.

In sentence 1, the adverb 'fast' tells us more about the verb 'swim'.
In In sentence 2, the adverb 'very' tells us more abour the adjective 'beautiful'.
In sentence 3, the adverb 'too' tells us more about another adverb 'fast'.

An adverb is a word that tells us more about averb, adjective or another adverb.



More Examples:

1. She was walking rapidly.
2. The kids love playing together in the sandbox.
3. Please come inside now.
4. His jokes are always very funny.
5. You don't really care, do you?

ADVERBS OF MANNER

Adverbs of manner tell us how or in what manner an action is done.

Examples:

1. Reema danced gracefully.
(The adverb gracefully answers the questionn: 'danced how?')

2. Lata sang melodiously.
(the adverb melodiously answerrs the question: 'sanghow?')
Some example of adverbs of manner are 'happily''sadly' and 'easily'.

ADVERBS OF PLACE

Adverbs of place tell us where or at what place an action is done.

Examples:

1. I looked for my pet there.
( The adverb thereanswers the question: 'looked where?')
2. The party is held downstairs
(The adverb downstairs answers the question:'held where?')
Some examples of adverbs of place are 'everywhere' 'here' and 'upstairs.

ADVERB OF TIME

Adverb of time tells us when or at what time an action is done.

Examples:

1. They will reach Delhi tomorrow.
(The adverb tomorrow answers the question: 'reach when?.)
2. The plane will land soon.

(The adverb soon answers the question "land when?')
Some examples of adverb of time are 'now 'today' and 'then'.
ADVERB OF FREQUENCY

Adverbs of frequency tells us how often or how frequently an action is done.

Examples:

1. I go for morning walk regularly.
( The adverb regularly answere the question: 'go how often?'.

2. I do yoga daily.
The adverb daily answers the question: 'do how often?'.

Some examples of adverbs of frequency are 'once' 'twice' and 'often'.



ADVERBS OF DEGREE

Adverbs of degree tell us how much or in what degree an action is done.

Example:

1. The tank is almost full.

(The adverb almost answers the question: 'how much' or 'to what dgree the tank is full?'.
2. The soldiers fought most bravely.

(The adverb most answers the question: 'how bravely the soldiers fought?')
Some examples of adverbs of degree are 'very, 'almost', 'fully'. 'nearly', 'completely'and 'quite'.

3. Reema is very upset with her performance.
4. I looked for her everywhere.
5. The prince and the princess lived happily.
6. I am very happy to meet you.

9. He goes to his tuition class daily.

. How to form adverbs

. Adverbs of manner are usually formed by adding'___ly' to adjectives.

. Examples:

. quiet + ly = quietly

. polite + ly = politely

. Form the adverbs by adding '___ly' to adjectives.
