Negative Sentences

Read these sentences.


1. I am not wearing that dress.
2. She has no money.
3. They have nothing to hide.
4. I never lie to anyone.
All these sentences express something negative and are called negative sentences.

Sentences which have words like 'no', 'not', 'nothing' and 'never' in them are called negative sentences.

Let us learn how we can make negative sentences.
WRITING NEGATIVE SENTENCES

When sentences have different forms of the verb 'be' :
We put 'not' after different forms of the verb 'be' such as 'am', 'is', 'was' and 'were'.
Examples :
1. He is honest. (positive)
He is not honest. (negative)
2. She was at home. (positive)
She was not at home. (negative)
3. I am his classmate. (positive)
I am not his classmate. (negative)

In case of 'will be' and 'shall be' we put not after 'will' or 'shall'.
4. He will be present on the occasion. (positive)
He will not be present on the occasion. (negative)
5. We shall go to the picnic. (positive)
We shall not go to the picnic. (negative)

We also use short forms--
Examples :
is not--isn't
was not--wasn't
shall not--shan't
I am not--I'm not
will not--won't

When sentences have different forms of the verbs 'have'.

We put 'no' after different forms of the verb 'have' such as 'has' and 'had'.
Examples "


1. I have a pencil. (positive)
I have no pencil. (negative)
2. She has a pencil. (positive)
She has no pencil. (negative)
3. They had a pencil. (positive)
They had no pencil.(negative)

These sentences can also be written with the help of 'does not'; 'do not' or 'did not'.
Examples :
1. I have a pencil. (positive)
I do not have a/any pencil. (negative)
2. She has a pencil. (positive)
She does not have a/any pencil. (negative)
3. They had a pencil. (positive)
They did not have a/any pencil. (negative)

When the verbs consists of more than one word in sentences :
we put 'not' after vthe first word.
1. Anant is studying. (positive)
Anant is not studying. (negative)
2. He will go. (positive)
He will not go. (negative)

A. Rewrite these sentences in negative form.
1. Meena has a mobile phone. .......................................................
2. Rashmi was playing the piano. .......................................................
3. I am feeling hungry. ..............................................
4. They are feeling tired. ...............................................
5. She has a new dress. ................................................

WHEN THE VERBS IS IN THE SIMPLE PRESENT TENSE

We put 'do not' or 'does not' before the original form of the verb.
Examples :


1. Rima likes chocolates. (positive)
likes is the verb
Rima does not likes chocolates. (negative)
does + not + like is original form of the verb 'likes'
2. They like chocolates. (positive)
like is the verb
They do not like chocolates. (negative)
do + not + like is the original form of the verb

B. Rewrite the sentences in negative form.
1. Fashim writes well.
2. I study in his school.
3. Swati loves to red.
4. She practises tennis everyday.
5. Mrs Verma teaches us History.
6. Neena likes to watch cartoons.
7. The new students follow the rules.
8. Monali speaks French fluently.

WHEN THE VERBS IS IN THE SIMPLE PAST TENSE :
We put 'did not' before the original form of the verb.

Examples :
1. Fatima knew the truth. (positive)
knew- verb
Fatima did not know the truth. (negative)
did + not + know is the original form of the verb 'knew'.

2. They bought many flowers. (positive)
bought- verb
They did not buy many flowers. (negative)
did + not + buy is the original form of the verb 'buy'.
Short form of did not - didn't is often used.

IMPERATIVE SENTENCES (COMMANDS)

We put 'do not' in the beginning of the sentences to make commands negative.
Examples :


1. Go from here.
Do not go from here.
2. Throw this in the bin.
Do not throw this in the bin.
