Past Continuous Tense



Read these sentences.
1. I was walking in the garden.
2. They were watching a movie.
3. Abhi was talking to his mother.
4. We were playing in the garden.

The words printed in bold are verbs and they are in the past continuous tense. They tells us about actions which were going on in the past.
Examples :
'was walking', 'were watching', was talking', 'were playing'

The past continuous tense tells us about actions that were going on at some time in the past.
FORMS OF THE PAST CONTINUOUS TENSE
We use : was/were + -ing form of the verb.
Examples :
1. I was walking in the garden.
was + 'ing' form of the verb 'walk'
2. They were watching a movie.
were + 'ing' form of the verb 'watch'

Fill in the blanks with the past continuous tense form of the verbs given in the brackets.
1. Mother .................. in the kitchen when the guests came. (cook)
2. The baby ................. with its dolls when I entered the room. (play)
3. It ................. when I woke up. (rain)
4. Jia .................. the television when her friends came in. (watch)
5. Mona and Veena ................. to the market when I met them. (go)
6. The trains ................. late because of bad weather. (run)
7. The policeman fined the driver since he ................. the car rashly. (drive)
8. Rahul .................. a lot when he returned from the field. (sweat)
9. Monali .................. the stray dogs in her neighbourhood when I saw her. (feed)
10. Jyoti and Suhana .................. behind the curtains while playing hide-and-seek. (hide)
